Ethereum's Dencun Upgrade Slashes Layer-2 Fees by 90%

The Dencun upgrade introduces proto-danksharding, dramatically reducing transaction costs on Ethereum Layer-2 networks.

1 min read

Ethereum's much-anticipated Dencun upgrade went live this week, introducing proto-danksharding (EIP-4844) and cutting Layer-2 transaction fees by as much as 90%.

The change allows rollups to post data to Ethereum more cheaply, passing savings directly to end users. Average swap costs on popular L2s dropped from several dollars to just a few cents within hours of activation.

Developers praised the smooth rollout, noting that no major incidents were reported. "This is the biggest UX improvement Ethereum has shipped in years," a core contributor said.

The upgrade also sets the stage for future scalability improvements, including full danksharding, which is expected to further expand Ethereum's capacity in the coming years.
